The little computer that could ...

After reading the post on planetkde about KDE4 running smoothly on an aged machine, I was tempted to try it myself. Although the EeePC is far from old, its CPU/memory and graphics card are relatively low end.

I simply downloaded the latest KDE4 RC kubuntu live CD, and followed the instructions from the EeeUser wiki on how to make a "live" usb stick. A slight adjustment to the bios/boot order, installing the libgl1-mesa-dri package, and a short while later I was pleasantly surprised by the following:

I'm downloading it right away to try on my Thinkpad.

Yeah - KDE4 is making huge improvements each week :). Just keep in mind that 4.0 is just the "platform" - not the complete desktop environment. You can start comparing it to the other desktops again at around 4.1; when it's a bit more complete ;)

Good luck!

I would speculate that the task bar is resizable, surely I don't need a clock on my 7inch pc screen 1 inch large.

OMG, Linux can imitate Apple now, lets all whack off

What's impressive is that Linux can imitate Apple on ridiculously low-end hardware while remaining totally customizable. Too bad you paid all that money to become a slave to Apple's whims.

What expense? A dirth cheap eee running free software? Hows linux imitating apple it was a unix variant long before osx, the 'new' spaces feature seems oddly familiar and the features and effects in compiz were in place and looking better than osx first.

I have been wanting to change desktop for quite a while now but KDE3 do not really attract me enough to abandon Gnome. KDE4 on the other hand looks very promising indeed. If its stable and delivers half of what i can tell by running the betas it will make a big splash. A new better app that uses less memory and cpu, thats something rarely seen :D

How come is the task bar soooo big???!

The developers say it will be smaller when KDE 4 is released to the wild.

Freat news for Asus Eee PC users :)
